Den Chief Training

Posted on Mar 3 2010 - 9:39am

Scouts,

Elections are coming up this month.  One of the leadership positions available is Den Chief.  This is a terrific way to reach out to local packs and help the troop's annual recruitment efforts.

If you are 12 yrs old or older, like working with younger scouts and would like to become Den Chief, there is a training class scheduled for this coming Saturday, March 6th from 9AM - 12noon.  Please see flyer with details attached.  You can register on-line and will be reimbursed by the troop for the $10 registration fee.

Please let me or one of the adult leaders know if you are interested!

Snow Camping

Posted on Mar 3 2010 - 12:21am

Ok Snow Campers time is running out. You only have 6 more days to register for this great event at what should be a spectacular site. So don’t wait any longer and just click on the link for the adventure of a lifetime.

Snow Campers Register Here Now

Hello Snow Campers,
.
Snow camping time is here and it looks like an incredible time considering the recent amount of snow fall. We have made a few decision on Snow Camping and we wanted to let you all know as soon as possible. Here is the latest info if you dare to brave the wrath of mother nature.

When: March 19th - 21st departing @ 6pm from the church parking lot on the 19th
Where: Silver Lake campground - @ 7200 ft this should have plenty of snow!
Cost:  $80 (includes snowshoe rentals) and bring $20 for food on the way up and back.
.
Ok, now that we have that figured out lets talk about the event. This will be a little less strenuous than last years and will hopefully have a bigger fun factor but the unknown is why we like this trip. Ask anyone who went last year and you will hear a tale or two.  We will use the same format as last and be stopping at Dr Contags Cabin for Friday night and then head out the following morning.  We hope to have several types of snow shelters built and hopefully slept in before the weekend is over. A short hike on snowshoes will also likely be included (price of snowshoe rental will be included in the trip). Oh, did I mention sledding and snowball fights? We added 4 sleds to group gear and they should be quite entertaining.

We still need a scout in charge and are looking forward to working with who ever is up to the challenge. We have just 6 weeks to put this all together and have high hopes for the fun factor of this event. Can you help us fill out this team? Well, that should give you a taste of things to come. I guess the rest is up to you.

Order of the Arrow

Hello Troop 508,

At our next meeting, we will be having troop elections.  Part of the upcoming elections will be the Order of the Arrow Representative nominations and elections. The Order of the Arrow (OA) is a Boy Scout camping honors society.  Order of the Arrow members help run district activities like the upcoming Northern California Scout Jamboree and our local District Camporees.  The Order of the Arrow also maintains scouting campsites such as the Chesebrough Scout Reservation, which our troop uses on a regular basis.  Our main goal, however, is to promote a love of the outdoors and a love of camping to all scouts and their families.

As a OA representative, a scout will be expected to set a good example for other scouts.  They will be required to take on responsibilities and commit time outside of normal troop activities.

I would recommend the Order of the Arrow to any scouts who have been active in the troop and enjoy camping.  It is a great opportunity to meet and work with scouts from all over the country.

The requirements are:

-A history of active participation
-At least 15 nights of camping in the past 2 years (including 1 summer camp)
-A minimum rank of First Class
-To be elected through peer review at a troop meeting

If you are interested, please send an email to both Mr. Contag and Mr. Turpin.

Feel free to email me with any questions you have about the OA.  I will do my best to answer them.
